Where to Swim This Winter: How to Book a Warm-Water Escape

The pool season doesn't end in October. It moves. Here is where the water stays warm from November through March, when to book it, and how to get there without the trip turning into work.

Where to Swim This Winter: How to Book a Warm-Water Escape

Somewhere around the first cold week of October, a lot of people quietly put the idea of a pool away until May. We think that's a mistake! The pool season doesn't end in the fall. It migrates. The Mediterranean empties out, and the Arabian Gulf, the Andaman Sea and the Caribbean take over as the places where the water is warm, the light is long and a lounger is the most reasonable place to spend an afternoon.

This is our guide to following that migration: where the best hotel pools are between November and March, when to book them, and how to make the getting-there part of the trip something you look forward to. For the flying half of the plan, we've teamed up with our friends at The Window Seat, a travel magazine from the same family as Pool Atlas, whose whole philosophy is that the journey deserves as much thought as the destination.

The Winter Pool Map

Think of it as four warm belts, each with its own best months.

Arabia and the Gulf: November to March

When summer temperatures on the Arabian Peninsula become punishing, almost nobody swims outdoors at midday. By November that flips. Days settle into the high twenties Celsius, evenings turn cool enough for a sweater, and the region's pools become what they were designed to be.

[The Chedi Muscat](/pools/the-chedi-muscat-76) is the calmest version of this: a 21-acre garden on the Gulf of Oman with three pools, including a long, dark-tiled reflecting pool that might be the most photographed in the region. [Alila Jabal Akhdar](/pools/alila-jabal-akhdar-106) sits two hours inland and two kilometers up, on the rim of a canyon; in winter, its heated infinity pool steams a little in the morning air.

For drama over calm, [Banyan Tree AlUla](/pools/banyan-tree-alula-125) places its pools among the sandstone outcrops of the Ashar Valley, and [Ciel Dubai Marina](/pools/ciel-dubai-marina-110) puts you on a rooftop at a height that still feels slightly unreasonable. Both are at their best in December and January, when the air is clear and the sunsets are long.

The Andaman Sea and the Maldives: December to April

Thailand's Andaman coast and the Maldives share a rhythm set by the monsoons. The northeast monsoon brings dry, settled weather to both from roughly December through April, which is why these months are high season and why the water is famously glassy.

[Amanpuri](/pools/amanpuri-78) in Phuket is the classic: a black-tiled pool flanked by pavilions that has barely changed since it opened, which is the whole appeal. A short boat ride away, [Six Senses Yao Noi](/pools/six-senses-yao-noi-72) looks out across the limestone karsts of Phang Nga Bay. In the Maldives, [Huvafen Fushi](/pools/huvafen-fushi-12) and [One&Only Reethi Rah](/pools/one-only-reethi-rah-92) both make the most of the clearest water of the year.

The Caribbean: December to April

The Atlantic hurricane season officially closes on November 30, and the Caribbean's dry season follows close behind. December through April brings trade winds, lower humidity and very little rain.

[Rock House](/pools/rock-house-18) in Turks and Caicos sits on a limestone ledge above water so clear it looks shallow when it isn't. [Belmond Cap Juluca](/pools/belmond-cap-juluca-34) on Anguilla is a white-sand curve with private plunge pools, and [Hermitage Bay](/pools/hermitage-bay-26) on Antigua has some of the most private beach pool villas in the islands.

The Southern Summer: December to February

When it's winter in the north, it's summer in the south. [Posada del Faro](/pools/posada-del-faro-107) in José Ignacio, Uruguay, is at its liveliest from late December through January, when the town fills with Buenos Aires families and the light lasts well into the evening. In Cape Town, [The Silo Hotel](/pools/the-silo-hotel-38) has a rooftop pool with Table Mountain on one side and the harbor on the other, and the southern summer is the best time to use it.

And If You'd Rather Stay Cold

Not every winter pool trip needs a tan line. Some of the most memorable swims we know happen in cold places, in warm water.

[The Retreat at Blue Lagoon](/pools/the-retreat-at-blue-lagoon-9) in Iceland has a private geothermal lagoon that stays near body temperature all year, under a sky that becomes northern lights territory through the dark months. [Aman Tokyo](/pools/aman-tokyo-10) and [Park Hyatt Tokyo](/pools/park-hyatt-tokyo-123) have indoor pools high above the city, and an early-winter trip lines up neatly with Kyoto's late foliage; The Window Seat's Japan fall foliage forecast has the color timing. In London, [The Berkeley](/pools/the-berkeley-71) has a rooftop pool under a retractable roof, which in December is mostly a very good reason to be inside, looking up.

When to Book

Winter pool trips reward planning more than summer ones do, because so much of the demand is squeezed into a handful of holiday weeks.

•

Holiday weeks go first. Christmas through New Year's is the most requested stretch of the year at almost every property on this list. If those dates matter, book now. Many resorts set minimum stays over the holidays, so read the fine print before you plan around a long weekend.

•

Look at the edges of the season. The first two weeks of December and the weeks right after New Year's are often noticeably quieter, with the same weather. Early November in the Gulf and late April in the Caribbean work the same way.

•

February fills up too. School breaks in Europe and North America make mid-February busier than you'd expect. If you're flexible, early March is usually calmer.

•

Ask for the pool, not the room. At villa resorts, a room with a private plunge pool can cost less than you think during shoulder weeks. It's always worth asking what the upgrade looks like on your specific dates.

•

Check the pool's own season. Some pools close for maintenance or heat only part of the year, especially in the Mediterranean and the mountains. A short email to the hotel before you book saves a disappointing first morning.

Getting There: Notes From The Window Seat

A good pool trip starts at the airport, not the lounger. The Window Seat's team writes about flying the way we write about pools, with an eye for the details that turn a commute into part of the experience.

•

Pick your side. Flying into Malé, Muscat or the Caribbean at the right time of day is half the arrival. Their guide to which side of the plane to sit on explains how to choose a seat for the view.

•

Don't overplan the days. The point of a pool trip is to let an afternoon disappear. Their essay on why the itinerary made your last trip feel like work is the best argument we've read for leaving room.

•

Pack for the flight, not just the beach. Long-haul winter flights are long. Their guide to the best airplane snacks and the security rules behind them is genuinely useful.

The Short Version

If you want guaranteed warmth with very little travel planning, go to the Gulf in November or March. If you want the clearest water of the year, go to the Maldives or the Andaman coast in January or February. If you want the Caribbean at its best, aim for the first half of December or anywhere from mid-January on. And if you want something you'll still be talking about in ten years, go somewhere cold and get into very warm water.
